Robot vacuums are genuinely changing the way we clean our houses nowadays. These high-tech helping hands revolutionize the cleaning experience! You cannot deny that they tend to be more expensive; however, it’s easy to see the many valid reasons behind their pricing.
Roombas are expensive because they provide convenience and efficiency, are built of expensive components operated by complex software, and offer an unmatchable cleaning experience.
I’ll satisfy your curiosity by explaining why Roomba is priced that way. I’ll talk about the physical and software features that set it apart from other vacuums in the market. So, if you need a bit more convincing as to why getting a Roomba is likely worth it, this article is for you!
4 Reasons Why Roombas Are So Expensive
Because Roombas are less powerful than upright vacuums, many consumers wonder if they are worth their price. But they cannot deny the product’s excellence and the ingenuity behind its creation. And it’s not as if other vacuum types don’t have their own long list of complications!
These are the 4 reasons why Roombas don’t come cheap:
1. The Roomba Provides Users With Luxurious Convenience
After a long day at work, most of us just want to sit down and rest. But if you come home to a cluttered house, your rest will be compromised as you’ll be stressing over the cleaning.
With the Roomba, however, the cleaning is automated. Take a look at the Roomba i7, for example. It reaches all areas of your home and effortlessly removes dirt and dust while you don’t have to lift a finger.
Furthermore, the Roomba is equipped with technology that makes it quiet. Take a look at this review which states that the Roomba j7+ averaged a 54.9-decibel count, akin to a quiet office. It gets even quieter when it’s on a carpet.
Also, the new models come with voice commands. All you have to do is say the order on your Google device, and the Roomba gets on its way with the cleaning. The list of all compatible voice commands can be found here.
So while yes, the Roomba comes at a steep price, you cannot deny how much stress it alleviates from having to clean your house yourself.

2. The Roomba Is Made of Expensive Components
It should come as no surprise that within the Roomba is an intricate system of parts that allow the robot to do its magic.
First among them is the wheels. They are made of high-quality steel to give them sturdiness as it moves along your floor. The wheels are also non-slip to give it control since it’ll be turning around a lot, especially if the space is cramped.
On the other hand, the side brushes are made of rubber and are tough enough to force hard materials into the suction but soft enough not to make too much noise. The material also allows it to resist wear, ensuring a long life.
And those are just two! There’s a lot more. For example, throughout the robot’s arc are cliff sensors that tell the robot if a floor space is about to end. It is placed at the front of the machine and informs the rest of the Roomba if it should halt from proceeding.
There’s even a magnetic encoder in your Roomba that counts the number of rotations in the wheel. But what is more impressive is the RCON or the Roomba Room Confinement, which allows the Roomba to create an infrared diagram when it senses that it’s near the dock.
This efficient mechanism prevents the dock from bumping into the Roomba, preventing damage. So essentially, besides the tough quality material, users also pay for the intricate craftsmanship and the ingenuity behind these cleaning robots.
3. The Roomba Uses Complicated Software
Half of what gives the Roomba its magic lies in the sheer genius of the coding its circuit comes with.
The circuit board controls the Roomba’s speed and interprets what the sensor tells it. Say, for example, it keeps bumping into a wall. The Roomba is programmed to create a map of the room in its circuit, with the wall being interpreted as the edge of its cleaning space.
Besides the map, it’s also determining the fastest way to clean the available space using a complex algorithm. This means there’s probably no way for your regular cleaning path to beat the Roomba’s, as it is programmed to take the shortest and most efficient path.
You can even throw random objects in front of your Roomba, and it’ll avoid them easily! It’s as if it were a sentient being.
Its ability to be controlled via an app is also nothing short of impressive. One of the latest Roomba updates involved a child & pet lock system that disables the CLEAN button on the unit when enabled.
This means that your dog or cat stepping on the Roomba will not be an issue. The device can only be operated from the app.
Additionally, the Room Select feature allows your Roomba to target an area of your house. And the features just keep coming with every software update! There’s always something to look out for with the Roomba.
4. The Roomba Is the Best Cleaner
Companies often place premiums on their products when they know that it’s the best on the market. The Roomba is no different. Much like the iPhone, the robovac industry cannot best the intelligence of the Roomba.
Reviews often claim that the Roomba cleans spaces the quickest and is just the most intelligent robot vacuum overall. It is priced high because it offers an experience that cannot be matched by any other robot vacuum in the market. It gives its users a true novelty, for they can’t find it anywhere else.
Note that you should still vacuum your home with a traditional vacuum in addition to using a Roomba, especially if you have thick carpet around the home. I go into more detail in my article on whether a Dyson can be adjusted for thick carpets.
